Gay Marriage Info
Gay marriage is a term that refers to alliance
between persons
of the same sex recognized officially by the government, society and/or
church. Gay marriage is sometimes also called
“same/single-sex
marriage”, “homosexual marriage”,
“gender-neutral marriage”, etc. Each of the above
definitions shows a slightly different aspect of marital relationship
of gay people. Thus, for example, the wording “equal
marriage” is used by gay marriage proponents to emphasize
that
people of every gender and sexual orientation should have the rights
for equality.
Full gay marriage is now possible in seven countries of the world. It
was first legally allowed in Denmark in 1989, and can also be entered
into in Canada, Belgium, Holland, South Africa, Spain, and the state of
Massachusetts, US. Some other civilized countries like Israel also
recognize lawfulness of gay marriages registered in other countries.
The matter of homosexuality, and in particular, gay marriage, has
always aroused many controversies throughout the history.
It has
numerous opponents and proponents these days who take part in heated
and lively debates on the moral, ethical and legal issues regarding gay
marriage.
The basic arguments of gay sex
proponents suggest that gay marriage is unnatural, undermines
traditions and does not serve the primary purpose of procreation, so it
should be avoided and prohibited. At that, some of the above people
would still agree that every person should be free to choose his way of
life, including religion and sexual orientation. Yet when it comes to
legalization of gay marriage they would frown upon the issue.
Advocates of gay marriage, on the other hand, provide counter-arguments
asserting that civil rights established in the society need to be
retained regardless of the fact whether a person is gay, lesbian,
bisexual, etc.
It is not forbidden, they claim, for heterosexuals to get married if
they are sterile, too mature to procreate or unwilling to have children
of their own. Extensive research proves, they continue, that children
adopted to gay marriage are mentally and physically healthy and just as
intelligent as those who are raised in male-female families. Moreover,
gay marriage is above all based on mutual affection, respect, devotion
and loyalty rather than sexuality, that is why it is logical to suppose
that a same-gender couple can surround their kids with enough love and
attention to make them happy. Why, gay marriage proponents wonder,
aren't there so violent protests against marriage rights for murderers,
other criminals and even child molesters if it's all about children's
well-being?
As for the religious grounds for rejecting gay marriage, it can be
reminded that certain Buddhism sects and some other confessions have
nothing against it and do not view homosexuality as a sin. And in
nature there are numerous species which display homosexual behavior but
are not considered to be freaks because of that.
Speaking about traditions, gay marriage supporters point out that the
former undergo significant changes in the course of time. To give an
example, societies used to ban divorces, interracial marriages and
contraception. However, modern views have acknowledged the
inconsistency of such prohibitions; recognizing gay marriage
might be the next step in the evolution of minds.
Every person may have their own opinion about gay marriage. However, is
important to understand that sexuality is usually not something to be
chosen freely, it is an inborn quality and should always be respected.
